The governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding with respect to offshore wind development within inland bays making the province the principal beneficiary and regulatory lead for such projects. Energy NL welcomes the MOU as a positive action for renewable energy development in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The Memorandum of Understanding between the provincial and federal governments is a positive step forward for the renewable energy industry of Newfoundland and Labrador. With the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador as the regulatory lead, Energy NL is optimistic local content and involvement of the Newfoundland and Labrador supply and service sector will be a priority for any future development in these inland areas. Today is a day we must build upon as we prepare for offshore wind development.” said Charlene Johnson, Energy NL CEO.
Newfoundland and Labrador has significant wind energy potential both offshore and onshore, with a number of companies engaged in onshore wind development projects. As Energy NL members prepare for their engagement in both the onshore and offshore wind sectors, this MOU provides clarity as to who will regulate the inland bays for offshore wind development.
“As the committee established to formulate a regional assessment for offshore wind projects continues its process, much work remains, including expanding the focus area for offshore wind development proposed by the committee which Energy NL believes is far too narrow in scope. As we work to address that issue for areas beyond inland bays, I look forward to working with Premier Furey and the provincial government on the Newfoundland and Labrador regulated areas and creating a prosperous offshore wind industry.”
Energy NL represents approximately 500 member organizations worldwide that are involved in the energy sector. Members are active in all areas of the supply and service sector and include a diverse representation of businesses that range from offshore supply vessels and helicopters to carbon reduction and sustainable technologies, health and safety equipment and training, engineering solutions, and fabricators to law firms and human resource agencies.
