Mammoet Powers Up for Hydrogen Future with New Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Plant in Germany

In a bold move toward sustainable energy, EnBW has embarked on a groundbreaking project in Altbach/Deizisau, Germany, to build a state-of-the-art combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant. This ambitious venture is designed to set the stage for the future utilization of low-CO2 and green hydrogen, a crucial component in the global energy transition. Starting in 2026, the site will transition from coal to gas, marking a significant shift toward greener energy production. To achieve this monumental goal, EnBW has partnered with Mammoet, a leader in power plant construction and heavy-lifting solutions.

The Role of Mammoet: Expertise Meets Innovation

Mammoet, renowned for its expertise in power plant projects, has been selected to deliver a comprehensive service package for this pivotal project. Having previously showcased their prowess in dismantling the EnBW Neckarwestheim nuclear power plant’s Block 1, Mammoet’s involvement is a testament to their unparalleled competence and experience in the field.

The scope of Mammoet’s engagement includes the precise delivery, handling, and installation of critical equipment, such as Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), generators, turbines, and transformers. Their approach is meticulously planned to ensure an uninterrupted energy supply to households and industries during the transition period.

A Tailored Approach for Uninterrupted Energy Supply

Andreas Franzke, Sales Manager & Segment Lead Power at Mammoet in Germany, emphasizes the innovation behind the project: “A completely new concept has been developed in close cooperation with the client and our project team. This means a secure energy supply, fewer interfaces, and smooth processes on the construction site.” This approach not only prioritizes efficiency but also enhances the overall reliability of the power plant.

To address logistical challenges, Mammoet has recommended the construction of a separate temporary jetty. This strategic decision ensures that the power plant’s fuel-loading operations are not hampered by construction activities. Moreover, a 1,350-tonne crawler crane will be deployed to handle all heavy lifting operations safely and efficiently from a single location. Complementing this, Specialized Transport Modular (SPMT) units, a customized gantry system, and other specialized equipment will further streamline the process.

The Future of Green Hydrogen: A Milestone for Energy Transition

This project represents more than just a construction effort; it’s a milestone in the broader energy transition. By laying the groundwork for the future use of green hydrogen, EnBW and Mammoet are setting a new standard for sustainable energy practices in Germany and beyond. Andreas Franzke reflects on the significance of the project: “We are very pleased to be involved in this important construction project, which is part of the energy transition in Baden-Württemberg. It is a significant step into the future of using green hydrogen in facilities in Germany and beyond.”

A Step Forward in Sustainable Energy

The collaboration between EnBW and Mammoet marks a significant advancement in the journey toward sustainable energy. As the world increasingly turns its focus to reducing carbon emissions and embracing green technologies, projects like these are pivotal. The construction of the CCGT power plant in Altbach/Deizisau stands as a beacon of innovation and a testament to the dedication of all involved in making a greener future a reality.
