View Past IssuesIn a groundbreaking collaboration, ABB and Green Hydrogen International (GHI) are spearheading the development of Hydrogen City, a colossal green hydrogen facility set to revolutionize energy production in south Texas, United States.
The Hydrogen City project marks a significant step towards sustainable energy production on a massive scale. Leveraging ABB’s cutting-edge automation, electrification, and digital technologies, the facility will harness solar and onshore wind energy to power a massive 2.2 GW electrolyzer plant. This powerhouse is poised to churn out a staggering 280,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
But the ambitions don’t stop there. The green hydrogen produced will fuel the production of one million tons of green ammonia each year. This ammonia will not only serve as a vital component in fertilizer production but will also cater to the burgeoning global demand for eco-friendly alternatives in various industries.
To address the intermittency of renewable energy sources, the project incorporates cutting-edge underground salt cavern storage. With the capacity to store up to 24,000 tons of green hydrogen, this innovative solution ensures a stable energy supply and lowers the overall cost of production.
The green hydrogen produced at Hydrogen City will be transported via a 120-kilometer pipeline to the Corpus Christi energy port. From there, it will be converted into green ammonia and exported worldwide, catering to the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in Europe and Asia. Discussions are also underway for its use in sustainable aviation fuel and e-methane production.
As the world shifts towards decarbonization, projects like Hydrogen City play a pivotal role in shaping our energy landscape. With plans for construction to commence in 2026 and production slated for 2030, Hydrogen City represents a beacon of hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
The collaboration between ABB and GHI underscores a shared commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. By leveraging ABB’s expertise in power systems architecture, automation, and digital solutions, Hydrogen City is poised to set new standards for green hydrogen production.
The Hydrogen City project is not just about meeting current energy needs; it’s about paving the way for a net-zero future. With its phased approach and plans for expansion, Hydrogen City is poised to play a pivotal role in the global transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.
