OUR GREAT MINDS

    by Tina Olivero

Janet Cull – The Mother of Soul

Janet Cull is a St. John’s icon. If she’s not rocking it out at Spirit of Newfoundland, she’s singing a tune in the park, on tour with her new albums or chillin’ in the downtown bar scene.

Hearing Janet sing is like watching an iceberg float by off the narrows. She is everything: water, beauty, natural and feeling. The woman has soul and she’s not afraid to share it with us. That takes guts.

For her most recent musical works, Janet has won three MusicNL awards: FACTOR Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Pop/ Rock Artist of the Year.

Janet was selected as Singer Universe’s Best Vocalist of the Month and was the only Canadian winner (Vocal Performance Category) of the 2017 Unsigned Only International Competition. Janet’s “Island Soul Tour” was a smashing success with local Newfoundland shows as well as travelling to other places of the world. She’s had a blast!

Now with two award-winning albums to her credit, Janet is taking the world by storm, simply doing what she loves to do the most, ‘feeling’ all that life is and is not, and sharing that with people. For those in the energy industry, who would like to book Janet privately for a special event, she is available and you would be incredibly lucky to have her. www.Janetcull.com

At The OGM, we had the opportunity to interview Janet Cull. Here’s what she had to say:

    1. Where are you from, misses?

I was born and raised in St. Anthony Bight on the Great Northern Peninsula. I have however been living in St. John’s for 20 years now so this is home now.

    2. How did you get into music?

I began singing in church (the Salvation Army) at the age of four. I grew up in quite a musical family surrounded by music. I decided at the age of 19 to sing professionally and haven’t looked back since. It’s not a choice anymore. its a way of life!

    3. What makes you passionate about Newfoundland?

Growing up near the ocean is extremely inspiring! It’s such a part of who I am. It’s the beauty and the struggle. Being an islander is so special and it’s something that only others who have grown up on an island can really understand.

    4. What inspires your music?

My experiences are the biggest thing that inspires my writing. I like to sing about what I live through day-to-day or even just a specific moment of my life. Music for me is feeling so that’s what I sing about.

    5. What are you working on now?

I just finished writing songs for a new album so I will be touring the Island over the summer and bringing my new tunes to my audiences. I am hoping to get in the studio to record the next album in the fall of 2019.

    7. What does it take to be successful?

The music business is a tricky one. The most important thing for me is to be true to myself and do what it is I WANT…not necessarily what someone else thinks you SHOULD do to be successful. Success means different things to different people. My biggest success without a doubt is my beautiful son Jack. It’s very important to me that he grows up knowing his mommy stuck to her guns and produced and released music she is very proud of. There’s always more to learn as a performer/artist. You never stop learning…..I LOVE that!

    8. What type of gigs are your favourite?

I don’t really have a specific favourite gig with regards to venue whether it be a theatre, bar, etc. as long as I move my audience. When I can feel their emotion from the stage that’s what really makes me happy with my performance. The whole point is for me to feel and in turn the audience will feel it as well.

    9. What’s your vision and goal for your career?

I really just want to continue to write and perform. I just recently played in Greenland, which was absolutely AMAZING! I want to continue to tour and share my music with different people. I want to learn from other musicians and work with other artists.

    10. What makes your music so powerful?

I think what makes my performance so powerful is that I put my entire heart and soul into it. My music is coming from such an honest and sometimes very vulnerable place. It’s a way for me to connect with myself and also the audience. Music is the universal language.

    11. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Always follow your instinct. Listen to as much live music as possible. LISTENING is so important. I’ve learned so much over the years from other writers, singers, and performers. Stay true to who you are and don’t let the little things get ya down!

30 years ago, Tina Olivero looked into the future and saw an opportunity to make a difference for her province and people. That difference came in the form of the oil and gas sector. Six years before there was even a drop of oil brought to the shores of Newfoundland, she founded The Oil and Gas Magazine (THE OGM) from a back room in her home on Signal Hill Road, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. A single mother, no financing, no previous journalism or oil and gas experience, she forged ahead, with a creative vision and one heck of a heaping dose of sheer determination. With her pioneering spirit, Ms. Olivero developed a magazine that would educate, inspire, motivate and entertain oil and gas readers around the world — She prides herself in marketing and promoting our province and resources in unprecedented ways. The OGM is a magazine that focuses on our projects, our people, our opportunities and ultimately becomes the bridge to new energy outcomes and a sustainable new energy world. Now diversifying into the communications realms, a natural progression from the Magazine, The OGM now offers an entirely new division - Oil & Gas Media. Today, The Oil and Gas Magazine is a global phenomenon that operates not only in Newfoundland, but also in Calgary and is read by oil and gas enthusiasts in Norway, Aberdeen, across the US and as far reaching as Abu Dhabi, in the Middle East. Believing that Energy is everyone’s business, Ms. Olivero has combined energy + culture to embrace the worlds commitment to a balance of work and home life as well as fostering a foundation for health and well being. In this era of growth and development business and lifestyle are an eloquent mix, there is no beginning or end. Partnering with over 90 oil and gas exhibitions and conferences around the world, Ms. Olivero's role as a Global Visionary is to embrace communication in a way that fosters oil and gas business and industry growth in new and creative ways.
