View Past IssuesAker Solutions announces an acceptance of its ambitious climate commitment by the Science Based Targets initiative. In line with the science-based criteria, Aker Solutions is committed to halving greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050.
Science-based targets are emissions reduction targets in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. By developing targets using climate science and the Science Based Target initiative’s (SBTi) methodologies, Aker Solutions will promote best practices in emissions reduction and further demonstrate its commitment to climate action. In line with the science-based criteria, Aker Solutions has committed to near- and long-term company-wide greenhouse gas emission reductions and will submit its reduction target within 24 months for official validation by the SBTi.
“We are committed to ambitious climate action with science-based targets for reducing our own emissions while helping our customers provide the world with low-carbon and renewable solutions to meet future energy needs. The energy industry has a key role to play in reducing the effects of climate change, and Aker Solutions aims to lead positive and measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in our industry,” said Kjetel Digre, chief executive officer of Aker Solutions.
“We welcome that Aker Solutions has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative. This shows a clear commitment to work towards a sustainable future and aligns perfectly with what we want to achieve with cross-sector collaboration,” said Kim Gabrielli, CEO of UN Global Compact Norway.
Over the last few years, Aker Solutions has rapidly grown its activities within solutions for low-carbon and renewable energy, and the company has also taken decisive steps to reduce its own emissions and footprint.
Aker Solutions’ Climate Action Plan is the roadmap that is transforming the company to be less carbon intensive, and help solve global energy challenges for future generations. The plan includes achieving 100 percent of energy use from renewable sources, improving heating systems to utilize biogenic and electric sources, electrifying mobile vehicles across sites, and certifying the enterprise to ISO 50001.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
