Alectra Utilities has been awarded the ClimateWise Sustainability Leadership Award for the development of a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) baseline across all nine facilities in the GTHA.
Caroline Karvonen, Alectra’s Manager of Sustainability, received the award on behalf of the company at a recognition event held Thursday evening at the GM Canada, Technical Research Centre. This is the first time that Alectra has won this award.
The baseline that was used to measure the GHG reduction was taken from GHG emissions associated with electricity consumption, natural gas, fleet fuel and use of sulfur hexafluoride gas (SF6). The data was collected in 2016 and 2017 and compared between all nine Alectra offices and service centres. Alectra reports a decrease of 4.6% or 424.26 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents from 2016 to 2017.
ClimateWise is a network of leading businesses and institutions operating in and around York Region that create, set and achieve sustainability goals. Alectra, through one of its predecessor utilities, is a founding member of ClimateWise and continues to support sustainable initiatives.
“It is an honour to be recognized by ClimateWise for the work we are doing in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” said Brian Bentz, Alectra’s President and CEO. “This award recognizes our commitment to being a company that is focused on sustainability.”
