View Past IssuesA unique case study featuring OSP technology is highlighted in the June issue of the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT).
The case study outlines a series of coiled tubing (CT) string failures experienced by a major Canadian service provider in the Montney formation in northeastern British Columbia. “The strings were failing well below their expected fatigue life, prompting the CT service company to instigate detailed analyses to determine the cause,” said Stan Leong, President and CEO of OSP.
The analyses included using the OSP LifeCheck™ test kit suite to determine overall microbial levels as well as the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and acid producing bacteria (APB) – two metabolic subtypes known to be related to microbial influenced corrosion (MIC).
OSP offers several LifeCheck test kits to quickly and easily evaluate microbial content. The OSP LifeCheck ATP test kit detects all forms of life and provides results in less than 5 minutes.
“The results all pointed to MIC,” said Leong, “which is caused by the formation of biofilms resulting in localized corrosion in the form of very small pits, leading to cracks and eventual pipe failure.”
Laboratory and field studies were then performed to create a biocide treatment program. They evaluated four available biocides in lab studies and the 2K7 biocide product demonstrated the most effective, long-term reduction of bacterial levels.
2K7 is a broad-spectrum biocide that has been effectively used as an antimicrobial and preservative in many industries for over 30 years. OSP offers several formats and formulations of 2K7 depending on the application. Unlike other biocides, which can react with friction reducers and negate the effect of both, 2K7 is nonionic and does not react with other fluid additives.
“This makes 2K7 particularly well suited to oil and gas applications, from upstream to downstream,” said Leong. “Wherever you have water, you will have bacterial growth,” he said. “OSP has the expertise to know when and where you need to treat.”
The CT service provider has successfully applied the biocide treatment program in the field, both in the Montney and Eagle Ford formations.
OSP is a leading provider of water treatment solutions for energy, industrial and recreational applications, and specializes in the manufacturing, sales and distribution of water treatment chemistries across Canada and the United States. Their products include biocides, microbial monitoring kits, scale and corrosion inhibitors, and odor control.
