5 Days in the UK – Reveals the Strong Need for: Collaboration, Creativity and Competence

Day 2

Canada Europe Energy Summit

A high security event, the Canada Europe Energy Summit was the gathering place for the top energy officials in Britain. Located at the lush and favoured British Foreign & Common Wealth Office, Mr. Tony Kay led the contingency of speakers through an all morning “go energy” forum. The summit was opened up by Canadian High Commissioner, London H.E. Gordon Campbell. Next up, was President and Country Chair of Shell Canada Ltd. who took a strong stand for Energy, Environment and the role of the transatlantic relationship between Canada and the UK.

The morning proceeded with panel discussions on energy security that addressed the export opportunities between the two regions. Bob Hamilton, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Canada, then presented the overall Canada stand for energy relations between regions. The Right Honourable Matthew Hancock, MP, Minister of State for energy addressed the dynamic energy relationship between the regions and the opportunities that abound. Then, a panel of energy professionals addressed sustainable energy and industrial infrastructure that would ignite a new energy future. Topics included: Carbon Capture and Storage and Regulations of Alberta which could be adopted in the UK.

At lunch we had the pleasure of listening to the distinguished and always entertaining Peter Tertzakian, a Chief Energy Economist from Alberta who always seems to put things most eloquently into perspective. At the end of Peter’s talks, the confusion and fog of many differing views seemed to fall away and his perspective brought clarity that is unprecedented in the industry to date. I think it’s time we married his talks with great storytellers and work on making energy everyone’s business!

The Financial Times

After the summit we had the opportunity to visit the Financial Times, meeting with energy Journalist Michael Kavanagh. The Financial Times is one of the world’s leading business news organizations and is recognized internationally for its authority on financial topics. Providing essential news, commentary, data and analysis on the energy sector, this is an influential platform for the energy industry and boasts a circulation of approximately 665,000 papers. New media and mobile media is rapidly becoming an important element of the Financial Times Media, driving almost half of its total traffic and 20 percent of digital subscriptions. It’s interesting to note that the Financial Time education products serve 37 of the world’s top 50 business schools. Learn more at www.ft.com
