State-of-the-Art Facilities

One of the key reasons why Westcon Shipyard is so impressive is its world-class facilities. The shipyard is located in the Norwegian town of Ølen and boasts a massive drydock measuring 140 meters in length, 22 meters in width, and 8.5 meters in depth. This impressive facility allows Westcon to handle a wide range of ships, from small fishing vessels to large ocean-going cargo ships.

In addition to its drydock, Westcon also has a modern workshop that is equipped with the latest technology and equipment. This allows the shipyard to carry out repairs and upgrades with a high degree of precision and efficiency, which is critical when dealing with complex vessels that require specialized skills and knowledge.

Highly Skilled Workforce

Another factor that sets Westcon Shipyard apart from its competitors is the quality of its workforce. The shipyard employs over 300 skilled professionals, including engineers, welders, electricians, and other specialized technicians. Many of these workers have years of experience in the shipbuilding industry, and they bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their work.

At Westcon, the workforce is not just skilled, but also highly motivated and committed to delivering exceptional results. In addition to its own research and development, Westcon also works closely with leading shipbuilders and other industry experts to stay at the forefront of shipbuilding technology. This allows the shipyard to offer its customers the latest and most advanced solutions, ensuring that its vessels are equipped with the best possible technology.

RENEWABLE ENERGY – ONSHORE WIND TURBINES

In addition to its shipbuilding activities, Westcon has also been involved in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the production of wind turbines. In 2021, the shipyard announced plans to establish a new production facility for wind turbines at Dommersnes, a site located on the west coast of Norway.

The new facility will focus on the series production of onshore wind turbines, which are used to generate electricity from wind power. The turbines produced at the Dommersnes facility will have a capacity of between 2.5 and 5 megawatts and will be designed to meet the needs of the Norwegian and European markets.

Westcon’s decision to expand into wind turbine production is part of its broader strategy to diversify its business and capitalize on new opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The shipyard has already been involved in the construction of offshore wind turbines, and its experience in shipbuilding and heavy industry makes it well-suited to the production of wind turbines.

The new wind turbine facility at Dommersnes is expected to create around 100 new jobs and will be a significant source of economic activity in the region. It is also expected to help to drive the growth of the renewable energy sector in Norway, which has been identified as a key priority by the government.

Westcon’s decision to expand into wind turbine production is a reflection of the company’s commitment to innovation and its willingness to adapt to changing market conditions. By embracing new opportunities in the renewable energy sector, Westcon is well-positioned to continue to be a leader in the shipbuilding industry and contribute to the growth of the Norwegian economy.
