OUR GREAT MINDS

Cox & Palmer: 20 Years of Great Relationships

Like many of you, lawyers at Cox & Palmer, Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest law firm, work in a service industry. Our business is to help you, our clients, succeed in your business.

Our relationship with our clients is our most prized possession. We are proud of our clients’ achievements, and especially so when our advice had some small part in your success. Without that success, we wouldn’t exist.

For twenty years, Cox & Palmer has been working with clients in all aspects of the oil and gas industry, from upstream to downstream.

We have played a leading role in the development of the oil and gas industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our lawyers have benefited from the following:

  • The privilege to work with the Honourable John Crosbie, considered by many to be a founding father of the industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, who practiced law with us until his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2008;
  • Working with client Governments, custodians of oil and gas resources, in both Newfoundland & Labrador and Northwest Territories;
  • Working with client project operators negotiating project documents, guiding them through complex regulatory processes and assisting in the arrangements for engineering,
  • building and operating offshore facilities; • Working with client service companies providing support to operators;
  • Working with client contractors providing EPCM functions in the construction phases and providing logistical support to the offshore facilities once production begins; • Working closely with the client suppliers to operators and contractors; and
  • Working with client downstream distributors.

In the next twenty years, there are huge opportunities for our clients. A maturing offshore oil and gas industry will continue to pose a variety of challenges. We look forward to helping you overcome these challenges and capitalize on these opportunities.

The Arctic is an exciting new frontier area. Newfoundland and Labrador-based clients are well placed to service this emerging industry. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald, Q.C., an engineer, and the Managing Partner and Chair of the Regional Energy Practice Group, sees the Arctic as a particular area of potential. “The lessons we’ve learned in the offshore industry will be particularly valuable to the exploration and development of the industry in the Arctic,” says MacDonald.

Sandy and his fellow lawyers in the Cox & Palmer Energy group, Stephanie Hickman and Nicholas Crosbie, lead a dedicated group of Professionals who are committed to helping you grow your business, because only if you prosper, do we succeed. With over 180 lawyers throughout Atlantic Canada, and as Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest law firm, we can offer advice on disputes, we can work with you to negotiate complex commercial arrangements, and we can help you navigate regulatory mine fields. We can also help you to overcome challenges in many fields, including labour and employment, real estate, privacy, intellectual property and the environment.

Here is to twenty more successful and prosperous years in the oil and gas industry. We look forward to working with you in this wonderful part of the world, our home, Newfoundland and Labrador.
