The Answer My Friend is Blowing in the Wind

Windfarms are making a powerful contribution to our new energy mix. Countries are working together to reduce the impact on the environment as global capacity for wind power distribution has now reached over 70,000 megawatts. “Wind energy is one of the best choices for powering the future. It helps diminish acid rain, smog, and greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.” Apart from the environmental benefits, wind power is praised for its feasibility and low-operational cost.

The province of Alberta ranks third in Canada for its wind power capacity and ability to power over 350,000 average homes. Enbridge, an energy distribution company based out of Calgary, Alberta, alone has reduced greenhouse gas emission by 1.3 million tonnes.

Enbridge has announced an investment of 200 million U.S. dollars into the Keechi Wind Power Project based out of Colorado, Texas. The latest addition to the company’s portfolio began production in 2014 and is expected to reach completion by early 2015. The project consists of 55 wind turbines and its development will continue the partnership between Enbridge and RES Americas. The purchase has raised the foundation of the company to acquire over 1,800 megawatts of green electricity that can power over 590,000 homes. Enbridge is well on its way to reaching its aspiration to be the second-largest wind power generator in Canada.

As wind power becomes a more prominent player in reducing greenhouse gas emission, other companies recognize the need and the importance of investing and fueling the growth of clean energy distribution.

Microsoft, the second largest purchaser of green power in the U.S., sees great potential in purchasing renewable energy to foster their business. To establish their current views of committing to becoming carbon neutral, the company signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for all of the energy from the Keechi Wind Project. “By purchasing wind, we will reduce the overall amount of emissions associated with operating Microsoft facilities in this region and hopefully spur additional investment in renewable energy in Texas.” Microsoft hopes to extend green power efficiency throughout its offices and datacenters and has included a commitment in their Global Public Policy Agenda.

As the dangers of climate change surface, clean energy distribution from renewable resources are taking the spotlight. Growth and capacity for wind power are being acknowledged and expanded by dedicated companies, such as Enbridge, who are reinforcing the need to go green. “Industry experts predict that if this pace of growth continues, by 2050 the answer to one third of the world’s electricity needs will be found blowing in the wind.”

As the expansion continues, energy distributors are promoting global citizenship that ensures they are meeting the energy needs of the citizens and are reducing the factors that risk and harm our environment at the same time. The promise of responsible leadership that companies are taking on today, will enhance the quality of a much brighter, greener future for generations to come.
