Grizzly Bear Wind farm in Alberta Will Avoid Emission up to 343,000 Tons of CO2 Per Year

The new Grizzly Bear wind farm, located between the Alberta towns of Minburn and Vermillion River, approximately 170km from Edmonton, has now entered its final phase of development as the erection and installation of the farm’s 34 wind turbines has started.

Once commissioned in late 2022, the new 152MW wind farm, which will be operated by Enel Green Power, is expected to produce 528 GWh of energy, enough to power more than 73,000 homes in the area and save the 343,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year that would be produced by non-renewable energy generation.

Pennecon, one of the companies in charge of the construction of the wind farm, decided to rely on Sarens‘ international experience in the erection of wind turbines for this important project. The heavy lifting specialist has deployed ten units from its crane fleet, with capacities of between 1,250 tons (CC6800) and 120 tons (TC-130 120T), to carry out the lifting and installation of the 34 wind turbines with weights up to 180t and at heights of 120m, which arrived at their final destination at the end of September, thus reducing the time required for their installation and reducing the construction company’s logistical and specialized personnel costs.

The Grizzly Bear wind farm joins Castle Rock Ridge I and II and Riverview Farm, both with 105 MW of capacity, which is already operational in the Pincher Creek area of southern Alberta. In this case, Grizzly Bear will not only contribute up to 528 GWh to the grid but will also contribute to the economic development of the region by creating more than 250 construction jobs, as well as nearly $80 million in local taxes over its lifetime.

Sarens has extensive international experience in the installation of wind farms. In Canada, it has recently worked on the development of the new Jenner wind farm, for which it has incorporated for the first time a Quick Move Adapter to reduce the time required to relocate its cranes. It has also worked on the Whitla Wind Project, Golden South Wind Project, and Blue Hill Project wind farms, among others.
