Rennie Hynes

Business Development Manager, SNC Lavalin Inc.

Rennie Hynes is a proud Newfoundlander and Labradorian. Other than a few years of living in Alberta as a child, Rennie has lived and worked in Newfoundland and Labrador his entire life. Rennie obtained his three-year Environmental Technology Diploma and a Bachelor of Technology from the Marine Institute and Memorial University of Newfoundland. Subsequently, he received a Master of Science in Environmental Management from Imperial College, London, UK. Rennie has worked with SNC-Lavalin Inc (BAE-Newplan Group) for 14 years in NL and has spent portions of his career in the environmental and civil engineering departments. Most of his career has been managing the environmental department before accepting a position this past year as Business Development Manager for SNC-Lavalin Inc, NL. Rennie greatly enjoys outdoor activities such as fly-fishing, snowmobiling, and relaxing at the cabin with his wife, Hilary, and two sons, Blake and Ethan.

We asked Rennie:

The OGM: What does sustainability mean to you?

Rennie: Ensuring our present day actions and decisions as a society do not adversely impact the quality of life and eliminate options for future generations.

The OGM: Have you had a mentor?

Rennie: There are a number of great people who have helped me and continue to help me develop as a professional.

The OGM: What does success mean to you?

Rennie: A healthy and happy family! Also achieving goals you have set for yourself, no matter how big or small.

The OGM: If you were to describe your career in three words, what would they be?

Rennie: Versatile. Challenging. Satisfying.

The OGM: What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in the Energy Industry?

Rennie: Focus on your area of qualification and interest and stay active in the community.

The OGM: Describe a milestone in your career?

Rennie:  Completing a master’s degree while working fulltime.

The OGM: Describe a challenge you faced in your career?

Rennie: Moving into a management position relatively early in my career. It is a big adjustment when your responsibilities change to include managing personnel, clients, budgets, and schedules. You have to adapt and learn quickly when new challenges arise.

The OGM: What impact does technology have on your career?

Rennie: It has improved communication and extended business activity globally.

The OGM: What do the next five years look like in your career?

Rennie: It is an exciting time to be working in Newfoundland and Labrador. The next five years look promising.

The OGM: Were you always interested in a career in Energy?

Rennie: Working with a multi-disciplinary engineering company sparked my interest in various sectors, energy being one of those, especially here in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The OGM: What interests you to sustain a career in the Energy Industry?

Rennie: It is an essential sector and continues to grow.

The OGM: Do you have a role model you look up to?

Rennie: No one particular person. I find myself paying attention to those individuals who are respected by their peers in society and the workplace (my parents fall into this group). You can learn a lot from these people.

The OGM: What’s your take on Social Media and our ever changing digital world?

Rennie: It is an effective means to market and do business globally.

The OGM: What Social Medium do you use on a daily basis?

Rennie: Primarily internal corporate communication tools.

The OGM: What do you think of Social Recruiting?

Rennie: It is a highly effective recruitment tool, especially in a competitive environment.

The OGM: Why do you love what you do?

Rennie: Everyday has a new challenge. It feels like I am always learning.
