Powering a Net-Zero Future: Green Volt’s Visionary Offshore Wind Project

In a bold stride toward a sustainable energy future, Aker Solutions has entrusted ABB with a pivotal front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for the Green Volt floating offshore wind project. Positioned 80 kilometers off the coast of Peterhead in northeast Scotland, this 560 MW project spearheaded by Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy is set to redefine the renewable energy landscape.

A Visionary Leap for Offshore Wind

Green Volt aspires to be Europe’s first commercial-scale floating wind farm. When it becomes fully operational in 2029, the project is projected to supply 1.5 TWh of clean power annually—enough to energize approximately 555,000 homes each year. This monumental endeavor aligns seamlessly with the UK’s net-zero commitment by 2050 and Scotland’s accelerated target of 2045.

“This collaboration will not only propel us closer to a renewable future but will also strengthen Europe’s offshore wind value chain,” noted Henrik Inadomi, Executive Vice President for New Energies at Aker Solutions. “The partnership underscores our commitment to delivering scalable, profitable solutions that make a tangible difference.”

    ABB’s High-Tech Contributions

As part of the FEED Phase 1, ABB will join forces with Aker Solutions to craft the project’s comprehensive electrical infrastructure. From system design to high-voltage equipment, ABB’s scope extends across automation and telecommunications systems for both offshore platforms and onshore substations. Advanced power and energy management systems will play a key role in seamlessly integrating the renewable energy output into the grid.

“We are thrilled to collaborate on a project that is pivotal to achieving the UK’s offshore wind ambitions,” said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB Energy Industries. “Our technologies will not only optimize Green Volt’s operations but also support the UK’s 60 GW offshore wind capacity target.”

    Offshore Wind’s Rising Impact

Wind energy currently powers nearly 30% of the UK’s electricity grid, with an impressive daily record of 21.8 GW achieved last year. The Green Volt project’s innovative design will further bolster these numbers, sustaining momentum toward the nation’s renewable energy goals.

ABB’s credentials in the sector are formidable, with active roles in seven UK offshore wind projects totaling 9 GW of capacity. Their advanced automation and digital solutions help minimize costs, maximize energy production, and ensure reliable power integration—a blueprint for scalable success.

    Bolstering Local Economies

Green Volt’s development under Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round promises not only environmental benefits but also economic growth. The project will strengthen the supply chain for floating offshore wind technology across Scotland and the UK, creating new jobs and fostering regional expertise.

Green Volt is more than an engineering marvel; it represents a transformative shift in how the UK approaches renewable energy. With strong partnerships and cutting-edge technology, it sets a precedent for future floating offshore wind projects worldwide, paving the way for a cleaner, greener planet.
