PAVEGAN FLOOR TILES: Create Energy by Stepping on Them With Kinetic Energy

Innovations in clean and renewable energy are vital to the sustainability of our planet. As the world continues to experience the effects of climate change, the need for alternative energy sources that reduce our carbon footprint has become more important than ever.

A company called Pavegen has been developing technology that allows us to harness the kinetic energy generated from human movement. Pavegen has created a range of floor tiles that are designed to generate electricity from footsteps. The tiles work by using a combination of piezoelectricity and electromagnetic induction. Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain materials to generate an electrical charge when they are put under mechanical stress, such as being stepped on. Electromagnetic induction, on the other hand, uses a magnet to create an electrical current.

When someone steps on a Pavegen tile, the weight of their foot generates mechanical stress, which creates a small electrical charge. The electrical charge is then converted into electricity using electromagnetic induction. The energy generated can be used to power anything from streetlights to advertising displays, and even phone charging stations.

Pavegen harnessed the power of more than 13,000 people with an interactive energy-generating platform built directly on the Milan Marathon track. We used a digital signage system to highlight the immediate impact runners were making on the environment and supported Levissima in promoting their commitment to the circular economy. Each step across our technology directly contributed to a donation from Levissima to local community projects focused on recycling, sustainability, and more green-based activities.  

One of the most significant advantages of Pavegen’s technology is its versatility. The tiles can be used both indoors and outdoors, and they have been installed in a wide range of locations, including shopping centers, airports, and sports arenas. They have also been used in public spaces, such as parks and sidewalks. In fact, Pavegen tiles have been installed in almost 40 countries, making them a truly global innovation.

Another advantage of Pavegen’s technology is its efficiency. The tiles can generate up to five joules of energy per footstep, which may not sound like much, but it can add up quickly. For example, a busy airport terminal can see tens of thousands of people pass through it every day, which means that the energy generated by Pavegen tiles can make a real difference. Furthermore, the energy generated is entirely clean and renewable, which means that it does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions.

The potential uses of Pavegen’s technology are virtually endless. It could be used to power smart cities and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, or it could be used to power remote villages that are not connected to the grid. It could also be used to power emergency response equipment or provide lighting for disaster relief camps. The possibilities are truly endless.

Pavegen’s kinetic brand experience team supported Ford by building a unique new energy game, using the power of music and dance to engage with visitors. The Ford stand boasted two interactive digital totems to capture the attention of passers-by and challenge them to a dance-off on the Pavegen energy tiles. Two platforms allowed thousands of players to compete daily against the clock to generate the most kinetic energy by jumping and dancing on our award-winning technology. The opportunity to win a brand-new Ford Mustang MACH-E was the incentive to participate in one of our favorite kinetic brand experiences of 2022.
