View Past IssuesMost service companies consider safety as the most important aspect in their company and BELFOR is no different. In fact, BELFOR has created a safety management program that not only protects their employees, but also helps boost employees’ confidence. It’s a simple philosophy really, employees realize they work for a company that cares deeply for their safety and well being, which in turn helps them gain assurance on the job.
BELFOR is a worldwide leader in disaster recovery and property restoration. With a global scope and a local concentration, BELFOR supports clients in any situation from a large disaster to a minor misfortune. BELFOR started in Newfoundland in 1994 with five guys, one office, a van, and a truck to service the entire province. Today, the company has five provincial locations and approximately 200 employees. From an international perspective, the company is present in over thirty countries.
BELFOR differs from other restoration companies in a variety of ways, specifically strength in numbers. “When we had such a devastating disaster, such as Hurricane Igor in Newfoundland, we drew on all of the BELFOR’s international resources in personnel and equipment. We could draw on our international resources and had a range of solutions and offerings that did the job well,” said Darrell Hynes, Marketing and Business development official for BELFOR.
Restoring safety in a business is not always easy, especially in a demanding and fast- paced industry. The field is ever changing with new challenges with every project, whether it pertains to the Offshore, Environmental Remediation or Restoration. “In our efforts to restore and maintain a top quality safety management program, we have implemented a new safety tracking system software that allows us to monitor and keep track of all employees. Safety training is vital to the on-going success of our company’s safety program. We provide all safety and related training that is necessary to minimize accidents and personal injury,” explained Hynes.
BELFOR has been certified with NLCSA’s Certificate of Recognition ™ (COR) since 1997. The COR program is a construction and safety certification program for employers in the construction and related industries. It is designed to assist companies in the development and preservation of safety maintenance. Firms receive accreditation upon completion, development, and implementation of a company-wide safety program, a comprehensive hazard assessment, and internal and external safety reviews. Participation and certification allows employer and employees to recognize that injury prevention must be an integral part of their business conduct and daily working routine.
In order to maintain a good safety management program, we believe a safety manager has to be focused on one thing and one thing only: SAFETY. Therefore, that is the manager’s only duty so we have also added an administrative assistant who focuses on documentation, incident reporting, as well as updating training.
Job folders with daily toolbox talks, hazard assessments, along with other important documentation are given to each job site supervisor for every project to ensure all employees are fully aware of all, if any, potential risks and therefore have the necessary training to safely complete the task at hand.
BELFOR is committed to the prevention of accidental loss of all its primary resources, our employees, and physical assets. In fulfilling this commitment to protect both people and
property, management will provide and maintain a safe and healthy work environment in accordance with industry standards and in compliance with legislative requirements, and will strive to eliminate any foreseeable hazards which may result in property damage, accidents, and person illness.
