View Past IssuesRogers Enterprise Ltd. (REL), a full-service provider of health and safety consulting and training, has been working with companies within the energy, construction, mining, and service sectors for the past 15 years. During this time, the company has seen a steady increase in demand for its services, which include safety management services, industrial hygiene services, and competency-based safety training services.
Bruce Rogers, REL’s CEO, attributes his company’s continued success to having an understanding of the health and safety needs within those industries and tailoring REL’s services to meet those needs. In addition, Mr. Rogers states, “Clients that we have been servicing for the past 15 years have become accustomed to receiving quality services, under demanding timelines. After all, time is money to our clients, and they have pressing operational demands, which in turn mean that we have to be flexible in both our approach and delivery strategy. REL recognized early that as we acquire more clients, it will be very important that we not drop the ball, so to speak, when it comes to either the quality of our services and our ability to deliver within client timelines. As such, in 2010, REL began implementing a strategic plan to ensure existing and new clients continue to have confidence in our services and abilities, and that we continue to have the resources and capacity to meet future demands for services.”
Mr. Rogers indicated that REL’s strategic plan started in 2010 with the objective of recruiting additional staff, and expanding their reach across the entire province with the goal of providing more flexibility in terms of when and where clients could access REL’s services. He says, “In 2010, REL moved forward with construction of a new 11,000 sq. ft. corporate office and training facility in Paradise, Newfoundland. This spacious, multi-classroom facility has a 4,000 sq. ft. open warehouse that allowed us to install a new fixed Confined Space Entry (CSE) Simulator—consisting of two industrial-sized, interconnecting tanks for competency-based training in confined space entry techniques, and a fixed elevated work platform for Fall Protection training.”
REL’s dedication to providing a quality service and its investment in new equipment and facilities had an immediate impact on the growth of the company. Rogers says, “In 2010, REL had eight employees. By 2012, we have seen an increase in the number of employees rise to twenty. As our current client list continues to grow, we expect to see the number of employees to grow accordingly to meet the demand and to maintain the quality of services that our clients have come to expect.”
This expansion saw completion of renovations at REL’s existing training facility in Paradise providing an additional 7000 sq. ft. of training space and office facilities. As well, in 2012, REL expanded to central and western Newfoundland by purchasing a new 3200 sq. ft. building for training in Grand Falls–Windsor and leasing 3200 sq. ft of office/training space in Pasadena. In December 2012, REL expansion continued with the leasing of 5000 sq. ft. of office facilities and training space in Labrador City. Mr. Rogers stated that REL’s expansion plans are not completed yet! To service the Lower Churchill project, 2013 will see REL opening an office with consulting and training facilities in Goose Bay.
These new facilities ensure that REL’s services are within easy reach of clients throughout the province. REL has equipped each training facility with ergonomic furniture, state-of-the art electronics, and CSE and Fall Protection simulators to ensure quality training. The investment in additional facilities and recruitment of new staff will allow REL to offer clients more options and greater flexibility in meeting their consulting and training needs. Mr. Rogers affirms, “It is a statement of commitment that REL intends to keep raising the bar when it comes to the delivery of quality health and safety services.”
As REL continues to expand, Mr. Rogers has also taken steps to ensure that service quality does not suffer. He says, “Our services have always been subjected to a rigorous internal quality control process. However, as REL continues to grow and acquire more clients, it is important that REL put in place even more stringent checks and balances to ensure that our clients continue to receive the quality of services that they have come to expect. As such, REL has implemented the necessary steps to have our existing corporate Quality Management System upgraded and certified to ISO 9001 by the end of 2013.”
REL offers competency-based training in a variety of subject areas at both its training facilities and at client sites. At the request of the client, course curriculum can be developed and tailored to meet specific workplace requirements.
The range of REL’s high-demand courses includes WHSCC Approved Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Powerline Hazards, and Traffic Control. Other training programs available include Gas Testing Techniques, H2S Alive™ (Enform Approved), Asbestos Abatement Techniques, Lock-out/Tag-out Techniques, Respiratory Protection (SCBA and SABA training), Industrial Rigging, Slinging and Crane Safety, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG Ground), and many others.
Traditional and new clients also benefit from REL’s expertise in Industrial Hygiene and Safety Management Services. According to Rogers, “REL also offers air quality sampling (fumes/mists/aerosols/fibers/dust), gas detection, hazardous materials assessments, noise level testing, illumination/lighting surveys, ventilation testing, and asbestos sampling and identification. We also assist clients in the development of site specific safety management programs, respiratory protection programs, hearing conservation programs, and health surveillance programs. REL currently has safety consultants placed on client projects throughout Newfoundland to oversee day-to-day safety management on the projects.”
To better serve clients, REL has formed strategic local, national, and international partnerships with leading providers of safety equipment and supplies; integrated medical, rehabilitation, vocational, and injury prevention services; and QHSE project management systems. Those far-sighted decisions have allowed REL, whose business has been mostly of provincial origin, to expand their client base throughout Canada, to pursue new business opportunities and bring the company’s expertise to other parts of the world, including the Caribbean and the Persian Gulf countries.
