Impact Change, By Answering The Simple Question: Why?

I recently watched a TED video on the difference between leaders and those who lead—two very distinct roles—and the fundamental differences between the two are so simple, yet so profound. I thought how is it that such a simple concept is so hard to grasp by many organizations? The differentiating factor was that those who lead always start with the question “WHY?” not “WHAT?”

To put that in perspective, most people and organizations always start by answering the question: this is WHAT we do. While those who lead always start by answering the question: this is WHY we do it. What seems so simple to answer actually took some thought and struggle, but then it hit me. I asked myself, “Why do I get out of bed every morning to do what I do?”

Do you see how that is different from me stating, “This is what I do when I get out of bed every morning”?

This is my WHY …

I get to celebrate the ability to influence, impact, and shift public opinion. The OGM shows the world that the Energy Industry is sexy—you can find your true passion in this diverse industry, and the saying, “work hard, play harder” does exist! Taking it a step further, I set out to embark on a quest with Young Professionals to build a foundation in this industry and have them integrated with those of more experience.

This leaves them engaged, educated, entertained, and enabled to lead this industry as we see a shift in leadership in the ever-so-near future. I get to educate the world that major oil companies invest in many other areas other than oil, and that our demand to stay environmentally friendly to create a sustainable future is backed by facts not assumption. Creating a brand that is built on the foundation of fostering change is inspiring, and the best part is that I get to see a progressive conversion which only motivates me to push further and set the bar even higher. This is why I get out of bed to do what I do every morning.
