Fossil fuels would continue dominate as the main source of energy over the next four decades, with gas likely to be the largest contributor to meeting global energy demand, executives from energy firms Shell and Sasol said on Wednesday.
Shell Exploration and Production Africa regional executive VP Ian Craig said that with demand doubling, or possibly tripling, by 2050, a supply gap could develop, which would create uncertainty, but also huge opportunities for those involved in the energy sector.
“To keep pace with rising demand, the world needs to invest heavily in all energy sources: from oil and gas, coal, biofuels, nuclear power, solar [to] wind,” he said at the 18th Africa Oil Week conference in Cape Town.
