Hydraulic Dynamics: Manufacturing for the World Market

Hydraulic Systems Limited (HSL) started from their roots in the marine industry, initially in commercial marine and fishing industries and progressing into the oil and gas industry with the first project in Eastern Canada – the Panuke project in Nova Scotia.

Since then HSL has been involved in every oil and gas project in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.

This was initially in pipework pre-commissioning and system commissioning services. In this type of service provision HSL provides a turnkey service for their client base from the provision of comprehensive procedure package, full service provision during the pipework pre-commissioning and system commissioning project phases, concluding with the delivery of a signed off system document package.

HSL from the early days of their existence provided manufactured hydraulic equipment. This equipment covers the entire range of hydraulic requirements used by offshore platform and drilling units.

    • The range of equipment currently supplied by HSL includes:
    • Hazardous Area Hydraulic Power Units (Electric, Diesel, Air Drive).
    • Filtration Systems.
    • Hydrostatic Test Units & Gas Booster Systems.
    • Integrated Control Systems.
    • Actuated Valve Systems.
    • DNV 2.9 code cylinder assemblies.

HSL now provides this equipment for oil and gas clients with work sites in Scotland, Singapore, Venezuela and Russia.

    Export success stories

Seasteel, an HSL client in Aberdeen, Scotland, came to HSL with a problem with their unique subsea piling system. They required a totally unmanned damping system to prevent damage to their frame during subsea piling operations. This damping system was designed and manufactured by HSL within 3-months of the initial inquiry. HSL shipped systems to Scotland and Singapore and the commissioning was completed by the senior site technicians.

Tesco a client from Calgary, Alberta had requested the manufacture of fifty hazardous area Hydraulic Power Unit assemblies within a 3-month period. This request had been declined by other manufacturers due to the very short timescale. Having assesed the requirements, HSL in conjunction with their partner companies within Pennecon Energy accepted the contract and delivered the full requirements within the project timescale and within budget.

Although the client was in Alberta, no units were shipped to that location. The HPU assemblies were shipped to USA, Russia, Chile and four units were air freighted to Venezuela.
HSL prides itself on taking a clients concept and developing a design that is then supplied as a fully tested and functional system, with all required third party certifications.

HSL supplies and services now goes beyond the borders of Atlantic Canada and extends to many corners of the world. This equipment is manufactured in conjunction with our partner companies in the Pennecon Energy Group of St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

30 years ago, Tina Olivero looked into the future and saw an opportunity to make a difference for her province and people. That difference came in the form of the oil and gas sector. Six years before there was even a drop of oil brought to the shores of Newfoundland, she founded The Oil and Gas Magazine (THE OGM) from a back room in her home on Signal Hill Road, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. A single mother, no financing, no previous journalism or oil and gas experience, she forged ahead, with a creative vision and one heck of a heaping dose of sheer determination. With her pioneering spirit, Ms. Olivero developed a magazine that would educate, inspire, motivate and entertain oil and gas readers around the world — She prides herself in marketing and promoting our province and resources in unprecedented ways. The OGM is a magazine that focuses on our projects, our people, our opportunities and ultimately becomes the bridge to new energy outcomes and a sustainable new energy world. Now diversifying into the communications realms, a natural progression from the Magazine, The OGM now offers an entirely new division - Oil & Gas Media. Today, The Oil and Gas Magazine is a global phenomenon that operates not only in Newfoundland, but also in Calgary and is read by oil and gas enthusiasts in Norway, Aberdeen, across the US and as far reaching as Abu Dhabi, in the Middle East. Believing that Energy is everyone’s business, Ms. Olivero has combined energy + culture to embrace the worlds commitment to a balance of work and home life as well as fostering a foundation for health and well being.
